At The Makulinski Family Foundation, we believe that protecting the environment isn't a luxury—it's a necessity. That's why we've led the way in forming a partnership between Rotary International and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) chapters in Ohio, Michigan, and South Carolina to raise matching donations totaling $133,000 this year.
Why We Partnered With The Nature Conservancy
Partnering with The Nature Conservancy was an easy choice for us. TNC is dedicated to protecting and preserving the diverse wildlife and ecosystems that make our planet so special. Their mission is something we can all get behind, and what's more, their track record speaks for itself.
In the last 60, they've successfully safeguarded over 119 million acres of land and 5,000 river miles—all while operating multiple marine conservation projects worldwide. We're proud to join forces with The Nature Conservancy to create a brighter future for our planet.

Protecting the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan
Located off Lake Superior, the Keweenaw Peninsula encompasses 32,000 acres of complex ecosystems and landscapes. This ecologically diverse region has long been recognized for its critical wildlife habitats and climate resilience, providing essential refuge to endangered species such as the gray wolf and bobcat.
Realizing the unique value of this area, TNC purchased more than 32,000 acres in the summer of 2022 to secure the permanent protection of this irreplaceable landscape—a size equivalent to more than 23,000 football fields end to end!
Protecting this diverse area covers everything from ecological conservation to supporting economic development. To ensure its long-term sustainability, TNC will join forces with community leaders, the State of Michigan, and nature lovers alike to collaborate on a plan to care for this treasured land for coming generations.
River Conservation in South Carolina
South Carolina's rivers are integral to the state's ecology and beauty, and conservationists have recognized the need to protect and preserve them in light of the effects of global warming. TNC and Open Space Institute recently announced an exciting two-phase initiative to ensure 7,300 acres of land in Hampton and Jasper counties are permanently protected.
This project, referred to locally as "Buckfield," will form a 12,000-acre span of protected landscape in this rapidly growing region. Best of all, part of this protected area will eventually be opened up for public recreation.
This area is teeming with all kinds of ecological wonders, from longleaf pine forests providing habitat for the endangered gopher tortoise to the 36 miles of river frontage along two waterways.
These rivers are a vital part of the watershed, which supplies clean water to those who live downstream and enriches estuaries. Protecting this area will go a long way in preserving one of South Carolina's most significant habitats for future generations.
